Market Trends & Demand for Recycled Metals

The metal recycling industry in the UK is undergoing a transformation. What was once seen primarily as a waste-management task is now emerging as a strategic raw-material supply chain driven by sustainability goals, decarbonisation of the metals sector, and shifting trade flows. For businesses in the UK that collect, process or purchase scrap metal, whether ferrous (steel) or non-ferrous (aluminium, copper), understanding these trends is critical.

Market Snapshot
  • The UK metal recycling market is estimated to have generated roughly £31,199.51 million in 2024 and is forecast to reach £38,325.10 million by 2030, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 3.7%.
  • According to the British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA), the UK metals recycling industry processes around 11 million+ tonnes of metal arisings every year.
  • The domestic scrap metal recycling industry revenue for 2024 is estimated at about £8.9 billion in the UK, with a modest growth forecast.
  • The UK also exports a very large portion of its scrap metal. The BMRA indicates that on average the UK exports ten million tonnes every year, or 80% of all scrap arisings.
  • Recycling rates for metal packaging are strong: for example in the UK, 77% of steel packaging and 68% of aluminium packaging sold are recycled.
Key Demand Drivers
Decarbonising UK Steel & Materials Sector

The shift to lower-carbon steel production (via electric arc furnaces) is increasing the demand for high-quality scrap steel in the UK. Currently, much of UK scrap is exported because domestic capacity to absorb it remains limited.

Metal recyclers are being called upon to supply more of the steel sector’s scrap demand. There is an opportunity for UK scrap processors to upgrade facilities and link more directly into UK steelmaking supply chains.

Circular Economy, Energy & Resource Efficiency

Metal recycling offers major energy and greenhouse-gas savings compared to primary metal production. For instance, recycling steel saves up to 70% of the energy compared to new production.

Similarly, for aluminium and copper, recycled material significantly reduces environmental footprint. These advantages mean that recycled metal is increasingly seen as a strategic input for UK‐based production and manufacture, not just a waste output.

Construction, Infrastructure, and Packaging Applications

The UK’s construction and infrastructure sectors remain large consumers of steel and aluminium. As packaging, building materials, and automotive sectors put stronger emphasis on recycled content, the demand for recycled metals is rising. For example, recycled metal packaging in the UK already achieves high recovery rates (see above). By choosing recycled metal and uPVC products, we’re not just making an eco-friendly decision, we’re embracing the beauty of transformation.

Global Trade Flows & Export-Driven Scrap Market

Because a large portion of UK scrap is exported (circa 70-80%) there is strong demand from overseas markets. This gives UK scrap processors attractive options, but also exposes them to risks when export dynamics change.

The balance between domestic demand and export demand is a key factor for the UK industry.

The Benefits of Recycling

For the UK, recycled metal is more than just a by-product of waste streams, it is becoming a strategic commodity. With the twin imperatives of decarbonisation and the circular economy, the UK metal recycling industry is positioned for meaningful growth.

However, success will not be automatic. Recyclers and purchasers need to navigate trade dynamics, invest in processing capability, focus on quality and traceability, and align with domestic manufacturing demand. The opportunity is real, but the industry must adapt to seize it.
